Do It Yourself – Deconstructed Caramel Apple Favor

There’s no better wedding or shower favor than the one you can eat! Since we are approaching the end of fall, a caramel apple favor is a great way to send your guests off with something delicious and seasonal (although we could eat these anytime). This quick and easy do-it-yourself favor is a great activity for you to do with family or with your bridesmaids before your big day. It’s also a great way to save money on costly wedding favors! Make sure you’re doing this a day or two before your wedding so that the apples are at their peak freshness!



Here is what you need:

Appleschoose your level of sweetness. We used gala.

Individually wrapped caramelsaround 8.  If you are making a lot of favors or need a lot of caramel, here is a great place to get them in bulk at a discount. If you are near Pittsburgh, head to their warehouse to save on shipping. 

6 oz. jute cord, cut into 3-inch pieces

Favor paper bags 3×4 inches

Sticks for apples or dowel rods .25 inch x 12 inch, cut in half. Tip: we sharpened one end with a pencil sharpener for easy sticking!

Kraft tagsfor quick recipe instructions, your guest’s name, or both! Admittedly, we probably should have purchased smaller ones. 

We used a recipe from Kraft and have broken it down for you for one apple.

First, take a fresh apple and push the stick into the center (sharp edge first). Be sure to do this step as close to the event as you can since you will be piercing into the fruit. Next, fill the favor bag with the individually wrapped caramels. Wrap the cord around the top and close the bag with it. Attach the name tag by threading the cord through it. Lastly, tie the cord around the stick in the apple and you’re done!

Here is the recipe if you want to write it on the back of the name tag.

1 apple
7-8 caramels
1/2 teaspoon of water (or milk)

Wash and dry the apple completely.  Put caramels and water in a bowl and microwave for 1 minute or until melted. Stir to blend evenly.  Dip the apple in the mixture and turn to coat evenly. Place on a plate with wax or parchment paper sprayed with cooking spray. Let chill one hour. Remove from fridge, let sit for 15 minutes and eat!  

Alternatively, you can cut up your apple into slices, melt the caramel mixture and serve immediately as a dip!

How about them apples? Oh wait –we ate ours. It’s not easy doing research on the job. 😉
